Many local business owners tried Facebook or Instagram ads once, spent a few thousand rupees, got some likes and decided ads don't work. Usually the ads weren't the problem. The setup was.
Here's what actually works when your budget is small.
1. Stop using the boost button
Boosting a post is easy, but it's usually optimised for engagement: likes and comments. That's not the same as enquiries. Use Meta Ads Manager instead and choose an objective that matches your goal, like leads or messages.
2. Pick one clear goal
With a small budget, focus. Choose one of these:
- WhatsApp messages: great for venues, restaurants and services where people like to chat first.
- Lead forms: good for real estate and services where you call people back.
- Profile visits: only if your Instagram is strong enough to convert visitors on its own.
3. Make one offer, clearly
"Free site visit with cab pickup", "Wedding package from a set price", "Free trial class". People respond to a specific offer much more than to a general brand ad.
4. Keep targeting simple
For local businesses, location matters most. Target the area your customers actually come from, choose a sensible age range, and let Meta's system find the right people. Very narrow targeting on a small budget often makes ads more expensive.
5. Use real creatives
A simple phone video of your space or product often beats a polished graphic. Show the real thing, add captions, and put the offer in the first few seconds.
Tip: run two or three creatives at once and let them compete for a few days. Then pause the weakest one.
6. Ask qualifying questions
In lead forms, add one or two questions like budget, date or location. You'll get slightly fewer leads, but far more of them will be serious.
7. Reply fast
A lead that waits hours for a reply often goes cold. Set up WhatsApp auto-replies and call back as soon as possible. Speed is one of the biggest factors in whether a lead converts.
8. Track cost per enquiry
Ignore likes and reach. The two numbers that matter are cost per enquiry and how many enquiries turn into customers. Write them down every week.
9. Give it enough time
Meta needs a few days to learn who responds to your ads. Avoid changing settings every day. Review weekly, keep what works, and adjust what doesn't.
